When Chen Cheng-po entered into the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, he was already 30 years old - a comparatively late time to begin such an undertaking. Sojourning in Tokyo, Chen devoted himself to painting and took time to send postcards back home to his children. Through the postcards, he constantly encouraged his children to focus on their own studies by taking his devotion to painting as an example. During his time studying abroad, Chen Cheng-po used his favorite plein air style to compose important works such as Tokyo School of Fine Arts, Museum in Autumn, and Fine Art Museum in Ueno, Japan.
