In order to polish his painting skills, Chen Cheng-po parted with his family and left for Tokyo in 1924 by himself. He was not able to enjoy family time until taking a teaching position at Shanghai in 1930, where he was joined by his wife and children. Although Chen was separated from his family for a long time, his letters to family members and paintings of them, such as Portrait of Grandmother, Little Brother, and My Family, all expressed his care for the family and expectations for his children.
